Manchester United defeated Benfica by a 2-0 score in the Group A of the Champions League on 31st of October to almost secure their participation in the knock-out stage.
The first goal was scored in the 45th minute, as after Romelu Lukaku attempted to score from outside the box, but it was saved. Benfica’s keeper, Mile Svilar overlooked another effort and it reached the net after touching him. Lukaku’s performance arose some questions in the recent plays, but in this match, he demonstrated that he doesn’t lack any skill or motivation.
Daley Blind received the opportunity to convert a penalty in the 78th minute, which he did well.
The Red Devils could extend the gap with a penalty opportunity in the first half. Anthony Martial attempted to convert, but it was expertly saved by Svilar.
United had few chances to recover during the game, as the efforts of Portuguese side weren’t a child’s play. They frustrated the keeper, David de Gea, who had to make some brilliant saves in both halves.
The Red Devils are the leaders in the Group A with 12 points. Their next match in the Champions League will be against Basel, who have previously lost to CSKA Moscow and are currently residing on the second. However, before United’s encounter in this competition, they play against Chelsea in the Premier League on 5th of November.
