Manchester United loses to FC Basel in the Champions League

Manchester United suffered a 0-1 defeat against the Swiss side, Basel, in the Group A of the Champions League on 22nd of November.
United had the advantage in the first half prevailing by a possession of almost 75% with unsuccessful efforts from Marcos Rojo and Marouane Fellaini. Basel’s performance was rather dull by that time, as they were hardly a threat without a single shot on target before the break.
However, they tried to neutralize that image later on, reaching a higher amount of shots on target than United in the second half. Attempts of Dimitri Oberlin and Renato Steffen turned out unsuccessful, but it didn’t end on this. Michael Lang saved their day by firing from his only effort in the 89th minute.
After a perfect first half, things went negative for United. However, they were not in their best shape from the beginning, with the absence of Paul Pogba, who is a key figure in the midfield. Romelu Lukaku tried to score in the first half, but Basel’s keeper, Tomas Vaclik denied all incoming efforts. In the second half, United attacked less, as their opponents managed to threaten more aggressively past their defence.
In this competition, United will play their next game against CSKA Moscow. They just have to ensure that they won’t lose by a five-goal difference or more to advance further in the last 16 without any trouble.
