Manchester City Defeats Burnley 5-0 at Etihad Stadium

Manchester City secured their #1 position in this season’s Premier League with epic win against Burnley on October 20th at the Etihad Stadium. City was briefly knocked off the first position after Chelsea’s draw with Manchester United but moved back up after Liverpool’s 1-0 victory against Huddersfield. Guardiola’s team is currently leading the Premier League with 23 points, followed by Liverpool and Chelsea, with 23 and 21 points respectively.

The Saturday game against Burnley ended with a 5-1 score, with City managing to maintain 69% possession of the ball and 24 shots, of which 10 were on target. After the game, Guardiola himself praised his side for the ‘outstanding, beautiful, beautiful goals’.

The score opened with Sergio Aguero’s goal in the 17th minute. Burnley were definitely not in their best shape, posing little to no threat to City’s side before half-time, and finally losing hope after Bernardo Silva and Fernandihno’s excellent finishes minutes before the hour mark. Guardiola commented that ‘After we scored the second goal and third quickly it was much easier’. The game was pretty much over for Burnley at that point, but Manchester City fans still had a couple more reasons to celebrate.

Two more goals came from Riyad Mahrez, who curled a sparkling finish from Fernandihno’s pass, and later Leroy Sane’s finish from a Benjamin Mendy cross.
