England defeat Netherlands in an international friendlyPosted: March 28, 2018
England beat the Netherlands by a 0-1 score in Amsterdam to gain their seventh successive win.
Jesse Lingard fired the decisive goal past the opponents’ keeper, Jeroen Zoet, in the second half to mark his first international goal.
England’s boss, Gareth Southgate deployed an experimental formation, which was rewarded with a pleasant display. He placed Kyle Walker in the three-man defence position, instead of his conventional right-back spot. Even though the Dutch defence was on the poor side, England thoroughly controlled the game and managed to comfortably maintain the lead. Walker played his role well, and this is a big plus for Southgate, as he has more options to choose from in reforming his team.
Lingard’s scoring is another pleasant surprise for Southgate, as he supplemented the missing Harry Kane’s threat. With Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Lingard, Southgate has enough to choose from to build a strong front.
It has been the first game in charge for the Netherlands for former Everton’s boss, Ronald Koeman. A great task lies ahead of him in coaching the Netherlands, which was reflected in this game. He will need to raise the team’s efficiency, with his new captain Virgil van Dijk and such influential talents as Justin Kluviert. A whole nation will be watching his efforts, as he will be trying to show the best side of the Dutch team.
England will play next to Italy at Wembley, while the Netherlands visits the European champions, Portugal.
